RACING FOR A CAUSE

This year, the funds raised by you and your team mates for HUMAN RACE 2010 will be delivered to a number of worthy charities in need of support:

SRI LANKA

The civil war in Sri Lanka was officially declared over in May 2009. Since this time, over 300,000 people have been displaced and have had little access to basic essentials such as food and water. Many of the recent IDPs have joined welfare camps that existed throughout the latter part of the civil war.

CARITAS

The money raised will be put towards funding a rehabilitation program for individuals who have been displaced from their homes due to the recent civil war in Sri Lanka.  Palmera will be partnering with Caritas Australia to fund this program.

Caritas Australia has been working in Sri Lanka for over 30 years and is currently supporting their relief and rehabilitation efforts for recently and longer-term displaced persons. Caritas Sri Lanka plans to implement a holistic program which includes the sectors of housing/shelter, livelihood, psychosocial assistance, education for destitute children and community empowerment.

AUSTRALIA

Since its inception, a portion of the profits raised by the Human Race are donated to a charity that focuses on empowering disadvantaged communities in Australia.

ASYLUM SEEKER RESOURCE CENTRE

Since opening their doors in June 2001, the ASRC has become the largest provider of aid, advocacy and health services for asylum seekers in Australia. We work directly with asylum seekers, both living in our community and detention, to provide direct aid and support as they seek refugee status in Australia.

Asylum seekers continue to face an array of barriers to full participation in Australian society, including language barriers, limited rights to work and lack of access to Medicare and welfare benefits.  At the ASRC, under the one roof you will find an extraordinary place with more than 500 volunteers, over 25 direct programs and over 2000 asylum seekers in need of assistance.  The ASRC has assisted over 7000 people seeking asylum, provided more than 1 million hours of free assistance and turned no one in need away.

Event Information

"So what is this Human Race ?" you eagerly ask... Well, Human Race is a half-day foot race around inner Melbourne, where teams of four must navigate to a series of checkpoints spread around town, in the spirit of The Amazing Race. At each checkpoint, you'll be required to perform a challenging task in order to progress to the next one - challenges which will draw on every skill you can possible conceive of - problem solving, teamwork, strength, endurance, and maybe even some culinary clout!

HISTORY OF HUMAN RACE

Human Race is Palmera Projects’ annual signature fundraising event.  Palmera Projects’ HUMAN RACE has run successfully in Sydney for the past four years, providing much needed funding to vulnerable, marginalised and disadvantaged communities. In fact Sydney raised over $75 000 in 2009. Now it is Melbourne’s turn to host this eminent event and we would love for you to join us!!!

Based on television's hit show the AMAZING race - Palmera Projects HUMAN RACE 2010 is a race for humanity. All teams will raise sponsorship for worthwhile causes in the weeks leading up to the event, all while increasing your chances of winning the race!

Remember - the more money you raise, the easier you can bribe officials for easier challenges and extra clues – so start your fundraising early for your chance to win the glory, fame and amazing prizes!
